Short stories: A rendezvous one evening at a cafe in Paris

Strangely this tale starts not in France but in Singapore. I had just flown into this large Asian city – the first stop on my backpacking tour around the world – and I felt very green. My backpack was huge, heavy and uncomfortable. I had never been away from home before and, silly as this sounds, everything felt really foreign. I had been wandering the streets for hours, searching for a suitably cheap place to stay with no success. I finally found a backpacker hostel called Uncle Loons and struggled into the foyer goggle-eyed with exhaustion. All the dormitories were full but he had one double room left for 50 bucks a night. Would I like it? I had budgeted 10 bucks a night for accommodation but couldn’t have cared if this room was 500 bucks a night. Yes, I wanted it.

Uncle Loon handed me a key and I stood in the foyer wondering if I had the strength to lift this ridiculous backpack. Had I mistakenly packed a dismantled car engine in there? As I gently swayed in the foyer an Australian girl strode up to the desk. In an accent as flat as week old lemonade she asked if there were any vacancies. Uncle Loon pointed at me and told her I had taken the last room. She looked at me and smiled.

“G’day”, she said. “I’m Sarah.”

“Hi,” I answered. “I’m Peter.”

“Listen, mate, I won’t beat around the bush, can I share that room with you?”

“Umm,” I said. I was a little surprised by her forward nature but I really liked that smile she had given me earlier. Who knows, this might even lead to something more.

“Sure,” I said.

“Thanks, and by the way, you’re not getting a shag.”

Sarah was true to her word and I didn’t get a shag. I did, however, learn that she had been travelling around South East Asia for 6 months and was leaving for a kibbutz in Israel the next day. She loaded up my address book with places to stay and emptied half of the stuff out of my backpack. We took it all to an orphanage.

We ate at a steamboat restaurant that night and got pleasantly drunk. With each passing hour I found myself more and more fascinated by this amazing woman. I was going to write “in love with her” but that’s not possible, is it? Later that night we slept chastely in a large double bed. Sarah was up at dawn to go to the airport.

“I have to see you again,” I said.

“Okay, meet me on the top of the Eiffel Tower in six months time. What about November 22?”

“I’ll see you there,” I said.

Sarah leaned over and kissed me lightly on the lips and was gone.

So our tale finally

What are the top 10 foods that you like?

Living in Singapore, I get expose to many different styles and types of food. At least for now, for my first 18 years of life, these are the top 10 foods that I like in no particular order.

1. Sushi! Sushi is my all time favorite. I like any type of sushi ranging from those with tuna fillings to salmon fillings. All taste great in my opinion. Plus, dipping them into wasabi is just so hot as sometimes the wasabi burns up to my nose and can cause me to tear. Usually, i go to Sakae Sushi to have my share of sushi during the buffet time!

2. Crabs! Crabs are very delicious and I like crabs regardless of how they are cooked. Chilli crabs, black pepper crabs, butter crabs or even just simply steamed crabs can satisfy my taste buds and stomach.

3. Potatoes! Potatoes is a must have for me when having curry chicken. Mashed potatoes are yummy too. Potato chips is my favorite snack and I like the Calbee hot and spicy potato chips most! Try the mashed potatoes from KFC and the potatoes that come together with the Swedish meat balls at the level 2 restaurant in the Ikea opposite Anchorpoint.

4. Carrot cake! Not the western carrot cake but cai tao kway, the dish that is found in most hawker centers. My favorite is white carrot cake. Try the carrot cake from Ghim Moh hawker centre and the carrot cake from Bukit Timah Wet Market and Food Center.

5. Ramen! I love eating ramen, especially those from the food court at West Mall.

6. Ban mian! I eat any type of ban mian ranging form the original one to spicy ban mian and even tom yam ban mian. My favorite has to be the spicy ban mian from the food court at Tiong Bahru Plaza. Actually, any type of ban mian from the stall at the food court at Tiong Bahru Plaza is delicious!

7. Oysters! Be it raw or fried, I like them all! I love fried oysters with flour and eggs or ou jian the most!

8. Fish and chips! It is my favorite western food. Try the fish and chips from Botak Jones! It is very fulling and delicious! Botak Jones can be found at a coffee shop near Clementi MRT and there is a branch somewhere now.

9. Chicken! Be it spring chicken or just chicken wings or chicken drumlets, i love them all! Try the chicken wings from Ikea, the one opposite Anchorpoint and try the drumlets from Pizza Hut. They are my favorite!

10. Fruits! My favorites are watermelon, honey dew and banana! My favorite for fruit juice is watermelon juice! It is thirst quenching, refreshing and sweet.

This is all for the top 10 foods that I like. I have written mine, so now what’s your top 10 foods?

Singapore’s hippest party district

The Boat Quay in Singapore was a historic quay that was turned into a busy inland shipping port by the Chinese. It was a busy port handling up to three quarters of all shipping during the 1860’s. Many shop houses and store fronts were built in the area because the south bank of the river resembled the belly of a carp, which according to traditional Chinese belief is an indication of wealth.

Though shipping and trade is not what the Boat Quay is known for now, the shop houses in the area have been carefully preserved and now they house various bars, pubs and restaurants. Since the beginning of the 90’s the Boat Quay has been transformed into a pedestrian mall with restaurants, pubs, cafes and clubs. Thus it is apparent how the Quay’s socio-economic role in Singapore has shifted away from one of commerce to one of recreation. Many consider Boat Quay to be one of the hippest and most happening areas of Singapore with it’s plethora of chic cafes and restaurants and also the plentiful bars and clubs that are frequented by locals and tourists alike.

Today Boat Quay is the centre of Singapore’s entertainment and nightlife district. Between 7 PM and midnight the area swells with people strolling along the pleasant quay. At the end of Boat Quay and named after Lord Elgin, a British governor-general of India is Elgin Bridge that links Chinatown to the old colonial quarter of Singapore. The original rickety wooden structure was replaced in 1863 with an iron bridge imported from Calcutta; the current ferroconcrete bridge was installed in 1926.

The Orchard Hotel Singapore is one out of the few Singapore Hotels that are located in the vicinity of Boat Quay. Travelers are assured of an exciting stay that will enable them to indulge in the rich night life of the area.

Flying Business Class is the Way to Go

Many people travel by planes on a daily basis for one reason or another. Most often it is business people that have to travel frequently for business affairs and such. Many people find that if they travel frequently they prefer flying business class opposed to economy. Business class has also been called executive class. This allows people to fly with better accommodations and amenities then flying economy but it is somewhat less than first class.

This type of travel makes it more affordable and comfortable for those who don’t want to ride economy but yet still want some of the better amenities that can be offered. This type of Business class is generally only offered as the highest class on international flights as it can be a bit costly for the airlines.

The business class seats differ greatly from the regular seats as they have the option for you to be able to lie flat where as in economy you can only recline back a bit. There are actually 3 basic types of seats that you can get when flying business class. The seats that are installed for longer trips are the ones that will allow you to recline all the way back. These help people to feel more comfortable when traveling on long flights.

You may get to travel with an airline that offers cradle seats. Cradle seats are the seats that you will find that offer around 160 degrees of recline ability. You will generally find such seats like these on flights with airlines such as United, Delta, Garuda, Air India and Continental.

Another seat for business class flying that you may find would be the angled for a “lie flat” effect. These seats recline at 180 degrees to allow a person to sleep completely flat, giving them the feel of being in an actual bed. This may help to make their flight less stressful and more comfortable. You may see these seats on airlines such as American Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Northwest Airlines and Air France to name but a few.

The airlines that do not offer seats such as the ones mentioned above for their business class flyers, they do offer more leg room to help accommodate their passengers. If you are finding that you are traveling more and more on business trips or maybe it is even for pleasure, you may want to look into flying business class. This will offer you a roomier seating arrangement without having to pay the high costs of first class.

Singapore V Bangkok

Singapore has seen an unprecendented boom in property prices within the last 18 months and whilst there are those amongst you who will not see an obvious comparison between the Lion City and The City of Angels; there are nevertheless, some things that do deserve comparison. Bangkok’s concentration of sought after condiminium developments has until recently largely been centred around Sukhumvit and Ploenchit but despite concerns over transport the Chao Phraya river has now become an area of high interest. Likewise one of the most expensive condiminium projects undertaken in Singapore has been at the mouth of the river.

It is obvious to me why buyers should be looking to these locations. Not necessarily the people who want or need to be in the centre of everything and close to their workplace but the wider circle of buyers, those who wish to own a property in a Capital city as a stopover or those who do not need to be at the business centre of the city. The life of a river is ever moving, particularly in Bangkok where the river is still very much a working river and a hive of activity that never appears dull. Why therefore should a prospective condominium buyer not want to have as his window this great living canvas?

I can recall when London first opened up the great River Thames to residential development and the huge Victorian warehouses were first converted into apartments, and where the riverside did not suit warehouse conversion; modern tower blocks rose in their place. Many thought that the old dockside areas would never be seen as desirable places to live and again there were concerns about transport, however, now multi-million dollar penthouses are common place. This scenario has been repeated all over the world from Chicago to Cologne to CapeTown.

So why compare Bangkok to Singapore?
Because in the price of real estate there is no comparison. Current per square metre selling prices of similar type developments run at about four times the price in Singapore. Yet Singapore is still seen as an attractive proposition to the real estate investor Take a look at a copy of the Straits Times in particular the Sunday edition and see how many real estate agents there are. Now compare two similar ground breaking projects; One Shenton in Singapore and The River in Bangkok. One Shenton had a very successful launch and is being built to a very high specification employing all of the latest technology and positioned overlooking the Straits. The River is a fabulous twintower project designed by Hans Brouwer and being developed by Raimon Land located directly on the river, as the name suggests, next to The Peninsular and opposite The Shangri-La and Oriental Hotels. Both projects have stunning views yet prices of The River start at about 115,000 baht per square metre, a fraction of the prices now being asked for similar apartments at One Shenton. Little wonder The River’s launch has been one of the most successful in Bangkok’s history. It is also worthy of note that much of the interest in The River has come from overseas.Perhaps, at last, the investors are realising that in terms of capital growth Bangkok’s riverside offers much greater potential. There are of course those investors that still see Thailand as a potential risk. Once their doubts are put aside, just watch the prices, like the towers, go sky high!

Shopping in Singapore – Great Shopping Experience in Singapore

One of the major attractions that make Singapore the best place for vacation is its shopping experience. Singapore is a shopping paradise and I am sure that all shopping fanatics will like it. In Singapore, there are a lot of sale periods throughout the year such as the Great Singapore Sale from May to July. So, when you are planning out your vacation to Singapore, you should not miss this one out.

Great Singapore Sale allows you to enjoy cheap shopping in Singapore. During this period, you will enjoy great discounts up to 70%. Almost all major shopping malls and centres will lower down their prices during this period. With this opportunity, you will be able to get the stuffs that you want at bargained rates.

In this article, I will highlight some of the great places to shop in Singapore:

1. Orchard Road. Orchard road has many major shopping malls like Takashimaya and Wisma. You can get branded clothes, electronics and furniture all at one place. At orchard road, you can almost get anything that you wish to buy.

2. The Heeren. If you love music, Heeren is the place that you must visit when you are in Singapore. There is a HMV situated in Heeren and you can also enjoy a wide range of Asian cuisines too.

3. Bugis Street. Bugis street is a place whereby you can get a lot of bargains. Major shopping malls like Takashimaya usually have fixed prices for their goods. However at Bugis street, it is where your bargaining techniques will come in handy. So make sure that you always bargain and try to lower down the prices.

4. VivoCity. VivoCity is the largest shopping mall in Singapore. It is situated at HarbourFront where you can take cable cars to Sentosa to enjoy a day out at the beach too. In Vivocity, you can almost find all major brands that you can think of. It is definitely a good place to shop.

5. Centrepoint. Centrepoint is one of the most popular shopping centres in Singapore. In this shopping mall, you can find stores that sell all kinds of items, such as sporting goods, books, shoes and branded clothes. There are also fast food outlets for you to ease your hunger during shopping.

I hope that with this article, you are now more aware of the places to shop when you come to Singapore. So before you plan a trip to Singapore, make sure that you prepare your shopping list. I am sure you will not be disappointed with the shopping experience that you can get in Singapore.

Discount Airfare Guide

Frequent travelers and executives are among the masses that get a lot of discount in the airfare. It is easy to get discount airfare for them since they travel very frequently.

With the availability of cheap air travel reservation on internet, you have the option of planning your own travel arrangements. You can even compare the prices on your own of your favorite destinations.

ome countries like Malaysia and Singapore promote trading for foreign visitors during some part of the year. During this period, they offer cheap air tickets to their country on certain flights. If you can check with the other airlines during this period, you may get excellent discount airfare, which may even surprise you.
Other ways to get discount airline tickets Some elements of the low-cost model have been subject of criticism by Governments and Regulators, and in the UK in particular the issue of “Unbundling” of ancillary charges by both low-cost carriers and other airlines (showing airport fees, taxes as separate charges rather than as part of the advertised fare) to make the “headline fare” appear lower has resulted in enforcement action.

Budget airlines often fly to a minor airport that is farther away from the city center than the main airport – this saves them airport fees, which they can pass on in price savings, and you get to see unusual and exotic regional airports!

Previously only few rich people can afford traveling in Air flights but now a days there are massive discounts on all flights around the world to increase the chance for ordinary people to fly in aircrafts.

As with all service industries, convenience usually costs more. For example, a weekend getaway may be significantly cheaper if you are willing to fly on Saturday and return on Monday than if you needed to leave on Friday and return on Sunday.

Advance purchase fares tend to be competitive with major carriers but not significantly lower.

Different Airline companies are offering cheap airfares on flights to a wide range of destinations..

If you’re going somewhere a bit obscure, Find a great deal to the nearest major hub city (such as London or Dallas) and then pick up a hop to your final destination from a low cost airline or commuter service. Make sure you leave plenty of time for the transfer, though, as the hop airline won’t be responsible if you miss your connection!

Singapore Duck Tours – a Joyful Cruise on Singapore Waters

Fun begins by the very moment once being greeted by the wacky captain of the Duckboat who will guide you throughout the ride with a perfect description of the entire tour and other related attractions. Considered as the first and the only amphibious attraction in the Asia, “Singapore Duck tours” happens to be one of the most enjoyable ways of having maximum fun with the entire family.

The genuine Vietnam War vessel called the “Duckboat” which is a combination of a bus and a boat, takes its visitors all through a whole hour gliding on the land, rivers and also the sea while they get well informed about the city as in they are in an exploration of the entire country. The boat tour includes visits to the colonial municipal district and after the boat splash into the river coming through the woods. While traveling on the boat tourists would enjoy the highlights of the most popular Singapore attractions such as Clifford Pier, Merlion Park, Esplanade and many more

Also it is possible to get snapshots of all the attractive features of the tour and even the guide would take tourists and point out key places where one can take pictures with eye-catching views.

Singapore Duck tours can be enjoyed every day from 10am to 6pm and during some seasons special night tours are arranged until 9pm. Especially during the National Day Celebration Duck tours get accompanied by the “Hippo River cruise” which is also another ride in the Waters and people get the opportunity to mesmerize their eyes with magnificent fireworks from Marina Bay.
