Yachting in Singapore can be for sheer pleasure, even if you do not possess Herculean strength and stamina nor have the inclination to captain a yacht or take part in competitive yachting. In Singapore, it is common to hire a fully qualified skipper and crew to do everything for you while you enjoy the twilight and the breeze on the deck of a heart throbbing yacht, and help the captain only when you feel like it.
On the other hand, the captain and his crew must possess the professional yachting know-how and pass stringent test that require a great deal of physical strength for yachting; while the rest of us need only to be able to stay afloat with our PFD (personal floating device) for yachting to be a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
When taking part in active yachting, it is advisable to tie long hair securely, because long hair is likely to be caught as the yacht has all sorts of moving parts, or parts being made to move by wind, that are perfect for snatching hair, and they don’t let go nor will they stop moving. Getting whipped in the eye by hair hurts and causes temporary impaired vision.
As the abundant Singapore sun can cause a lot of damage to skin especially when it bounces off the sea water, and water being a magnifying agent for sun and UV rays, it is advisable to use a sun screen, polarized sunglasses and wear a hat. Wear a bright colored fleece tank top over a tee-shirt of quick drying-breathable fabric, and a waterproof windbreaker of breathable fabric, so that when it gets too warm, you can peel a each layer off, and you still have the hat to shade your shoulders. Wearing only a swimsuit will get you badly toasted and cause you to peel painfully the next ten days. Cotton and jeans are not recommended because when they get wet, they stay wet for a long time.
The bright color garb can help you to be spotted quicker, if you happened to be the “man overboard”. When you are standing or crouching – even a small boom can knock you overboard if it catches you by surprise. On a larger boat, a swinging boom can concuss or kill with a blow to the head, not to mention that it can send you flying right off the boat. I was told to sit in the dinghy.
Yachting is a unique way to get inspired, and great way to reward your staff or clients; no noise but the wind and sometimes the “plop” of surfacing fish. Yachting is a fun and exciting way to take in the Singapore harbor and the natural land marks of Singapore in its exuberant surrounding
